What Chronos Alarm measures

1. Three different things

Chronos can send three kinds of data. They do not work the same way.

Crash reports

Sent when the App fails, unless you turn them off. They are used to fix errors, above all alarms that do not ring. You turn them off and on in Settings > Privacy.

Usage statistics

Sent only if you have said yes. They are used to know which features are used and which are not. You turn them on and off in Settings > Privacy.

Opinions

Sent only when you write one and tap "Send". They are how you tell me what you would change. There is no switch: if you send none, nothing leaves.

2. What never leaves your phone

  • The title you give an alarm.
  • The name you give a timer.
  • The time your alarms ring.
  • Your location, your contacts, your photos or your calendar.
  • Your name, your email or your phone number: the App does not ask for them.

3. Usage statistics, one by one

If you accept, this is what is recorded:

Welcome

Which welcome pages you see and whether you finish them.

Permissions

Which permissions you grant and whether you complete the process.

Alarms

That you created, edited, turned on, turned off or deleted an alarm, and how it is set up:

  • type (quick, daily, interval, date or bedtime)
  • whether it uses Sunrise Mode and how many minutes
  • whether it uses snooze, how many minutes and how many times
  • whether it vibrates
  • whether the tone comes from the App or from your phone; if from the App, which one
  • the volume and whether it rises little by little
  • how many days of the week are selected
  • for an interval alarm, how many days pass between rings
  • whether you changed the title (yes or no; never the text)

When an alarm rings

That it rang, how many seconds it rang and how it ended: stopped, snoozed or unattended.

Sunrise Mode

Whether it started, whether it finished, or at what point it was interrupted.

Timers

That you created, used, edited or deleted one, its duration, how many you had running and whether you changed the name (yes or no; never the text). If you set it to repeat: how many rounds, how long it rings and at what volume, and when the cycle ends, how many rounds it did and whether you stopped it or it finished by itself.

Settings

Light or dark theme, maximum alarm duration, missed alarm notice, alarm view and the sound limit for timers.

Screens

Which screens of the App you open.

Opinion and rating

Whether you see the opinion question, whether you send it or leave it for later, what rating you give and whether you write anything (yes or no; never the text), and whether you open the Google Play listing.

In addition, Google Analytics adds on its own your phone model, the Android version, the language, the App version and the approximate country and city.

4. Is it anonymous?

Not entirely, and I would rather say so. Google Analytics gives each installation of the App an identifier. It does not carry your name and does not let me know who you are, but it does identify an installation. The correct term is "pseudonymous".

What I see are aggregated numbers: how many people use Sunrise Mode, how many alarms are snoozed, at which step the welcome is abandoned.

5. Crash reports

When the App fails, this is sent: which part of the code failed, your phone model, the Android version, the App version, the date and an installation identifier.

They are sent without asking because in an alarm app they are essential: whoever suffers an alarm that does not ring can almost never tell me, and without the report I cannot fix it.

They include nothing you have written in the App.

If you would rather not send them, turn them off in Settings > Privacy > Crash reports. The App deletes any that were pending.

6. Opinions you send me

If you give a rating in "Your opinion" and tap "Send", I receive: the rating, what you wrote, your phone model, your Android version, the App version, the language and the date.

It carries no name, no email and no identifier, which is why I cannot reply. It is not fully anonymous: with few users, the phone model, the language and the time may be enough to work out who wrote it. Do not put personal data in the text.

This is the only thing you write in the App that leaves your phone, and it leaves only when you send it.

Before accepting it, Google checks that it comes from a genuine copy of the App, so that nobody fills the inbox with fake messages.

7. Who receives it

Only Google, through Firebase, which is the service I use to receive this data. There are no ads, your advertising ID is not used, and I do not sell or hand over data to anyone.

8. How to change your mind

Open the App > menu > Settings > Privacy. There are two switches, one for the statistics and one for the crash reports:

  • Usage statistics: when you turn them off, the App stops sending them at that moment and deletes from your phone the identifier it was using.
  • Crash reports: when you turn them off, the App stops sending them and deletes the pending ones.

The App keeps working exactly the same in both cases.
